Photo by Terri Aigner The Virginia Draft Horse and Mule Association, Inc. (VDHMA), a 501c5 organization, was formed in 1978 to organize and promote the draft horse, mule, and donkey industry. More than three decades of dedication to a centuries-old tradition. Our organization has grown since to more than 200 members who share their knowledge, skills, and friendship in the promotion, enjoyment, and continued use of the "gentle giants" and their equine cousins. VDHMA provides many opportunities to work with, learn from, and teach others who share an interest in draft horses, mules, and donkeys. Association members have wide-ranging interests from farming with draft horses and mules to driving elegant carriages; from trail riding to dressage; from showing at halter to competing in pulling and log skidding contests; and from breeding and raising stock to caring for animals retired from the field and the show ring. Ownership of a horse, mule, or donkey is not required to be eligible for membership--just interest and enthusiasm! VDHMA is a member of the Virginia Horse Council and Northern Virginia Coalition of Equine Organizations. Activities VDHMA organizes and sponsors several events each year, including Spring Plow Day (April), hands-on clinics, and projects which support youth agricultural education.
